It’s been a while since I’ve had a violin lesson, as my living situation has changed. Nevertheless, my violin teacher was so impressed with my improved intonation (the ability to play notes in tune) <strong>she took the tapes off my violin!!!</strong></p> <p><strong><br/></strong>I want to be humble, but it has only been 5 months and I am already at that point, and I am proud of myself. I am playing Minuet #2, Minuet #3, Happy Farmer, and Gossec’s Gavotte in Suzuki book 1 now. </p> <p>Besides that, it’s been a wonderful day. I worked for 3 hours this morning at Petsmart, then I bussed to capitol hill, had my lesson, then ate a peach in Pike Place Market and bought some tea at Market Spice. Once in a while I participate in something called redditgifts — you do an exchange with someone else in the country or world, but you don’t know who they are until you get the gift. </p> <p>So my gifter sent me Harney & Sons loose leaf tea! 3oz of Risheehat 1st flush darjeeling, and 5 oz of Formosa Oolong. Both are excellent. I am trying the sample of earl grey they threw in with it tonight, and it’s the best earl grey I’ve ever had. I’m sorry Twinings, it’s just so much better…</p> <p>As for the violin, things are excellent. This morning I really connected with the instrument. I played Minuet #1 in the Suzuki book, and it was just…<em>right. </em>It sounded right. It felt right. Maybe other musicians know what I mean?</p> <p>My teacher said that at the end of the book I’d be ready to take the tapes off the fingerboard (for my followers who don’t know, the violin doesn’t have frets so a lot of beginners put electrical tape on it to know where to put their fingers). She also said that after the second book, I’d be ready for an orchestra.</p> <p>Just, wow. I was so flattered. I’ve had…4 or 5 lessons now? This week I’m feeling very positive regarding my progress. I’m finally at Minuet #1 in the Suzuki book, and I’m happy because this is real music — rather than little variations of twinkle twinkle little star by Suzuki and children’s songs.</p> <p>I am finally improving my staccato, which is a relief. I was worried I’d be forever staccato-challenged. </p> <p>To anyone who’s thinking of playing any musical instrument, do it. Even when I’m low and depressed, I can find the motivation to play because I love it so much. I had an emotional breakdown yesterday, but the violin is still there for me.
